In our childhood, we would spend our evening playing outside with our friends. It is so nice right? Those memories stay with us. In this list, we have some of the Original Classic of Malaysian traditional games.
Congkak
First and foremost, the game that sits in our heart is congkak. The game of congkak is a kind of traditional Malay game that is loved by women and children. Congkak is also known as the Anjung game. You play by sitting at anjung or balcony. The goal of the congkak game is to collect the most congkak seeds and take the final treading turn. The name “congkak” is believed to be derived from the Malay word “congak” which means mental calculation. Apart from the Malays, the descendants of Indians and Baba Melaka also enjoy the game of Congkak
The game of conceit basically involves simple calculations. Those who are efficient at digging have the advantage of collecting points and in turn winning the game. In the game of congkak, there are two materials, namely congkak board and congkak fruit. The congkak board is shaped like a sampan and can be made of various types of wood and there are five or seven holes in a row known as ‘kampung’ and at both ends there are mother holes known as ‘rumah’. The length of the seven -hole congkak board is usually about 80 cm and the width is 18 cm.
Two players are required and positioned facing each other. To start the game, rubber seeds or marbles will be filled in each village with the same amount and the house will be left empty.
In this game, players will start it simultaneously. They would take the congkak fruit and put the congkak fruit one by one into each ‘village’ heading to their respective houses in a clockwise direction, until one of them stopped at an empty hole and was presumed dead. The ‘home’ of its own is located in the end hole to the left of the player. The other player will keep running until he stops at an empty hole. And after that each player will take turns running until the fruit dies. Each player will continue the game until they run out of congkak fruit, and the player will fill the hole with the fruit found in the mother hole. The player who does not have enough fruit will have his hole closed, and the player who won in the previous turn will start the game. This will be repeated until one of the players does not have enough fruit to fill even one hole and is considered a loser, or when both players are bored.
If a player has made one round, i.e. past the mother hole and back to the hole next to the player, it can pick up the fruit on the opposite side of the hole if it dies on its own side. This is known as a “shoot”.
Konda-Kondi
Second classic game in this list is konda-kondi. This game was invented by the Malay people in the past as a method to entertain and have fun after a hard day’s labour. It’s known as ‘Kaunda kaundi’ in Indian society. Konda-kondi is a tiny game in which players whack each other with long wooden sticks. The Konda-Kondi game is a simple and enjoyable game.
